Town of Wawarsing
Nestled in the Shawangunk Mountains, our name means “a place where the stream bends”.
At the turn of the century an early hotel named Yamma Farms where owner Frank Seaman hosted guests like Harvey S. Firestone, John Burroughs, Henry Ford, and Tom Edison in a lovely Japanese replica located in Napanoch, NY. In addition we are blessed with a variety of seasonal farm stands that provide a fresh variety of fruits, vegetables, baked goods and gifts for visitors and residents alike.
Cragsmoor, home to the world famous Ice Caves Mountain, and now the Sam’s Point Preserve, is a quiet, reflective residential area for several illustrators and artists such as E. L. Henry, Charles Curran, and Frederick Dellenbaugh, who traveled with the Powell expedition to the Grand Canyon. Many handcrafters live in our area who have small stands or shops providing hand made pottery, jewelry, needlework, etc. for the shopper in all of us.
Meandering through our Town is the historic D&H Canal, so important to the early development of our region. La Grand Botsford, artist of life on the D&H canal, has his paintings on display at the D&H Canal Museum. The canal has been linked to the local Railroad Station and Museum in Napanoch with a Liner Park designation creating a great visitors destination.
World renowned Schrade Cutlery, Channel Master, VAW Aluminum, the Pogo stick, and Apocalypse Snow Board companies once provided hundreds of jobs to the area. While these giants are gone their imprint is still on the area.
Must sees are Ellenville Knife works, the Shadowland Theater, Hunt Memorial Building, Stone Church, various fishing streams, Shawangunk Golf Course, Cragsmoor Museum, Ellenville Public Library and Museum, Greenfield Park Museum, Sam’s Point, Cragsmoor Stone Church and Museum, Joseph Y.
